SC Indicator and Surrogate Species Work Group
MUST-READ LIST for this WG before April 23rd!
To give you the best opportunity of coming to the workshop prepared to actively participate in the discussions, we've prepared the attached list of "must-reads" - although one alternative is a short video.
Objective 2.7 Work Plan
A Ppt slide image depicting the objective and identified tasks (steps/timeline) to advance the work in identifying surrogate species use as planning and monitoring approach to landscape-level conservation. (It is part of Section B of the 5-Year Work Plan - http://applcc.org/our-work/5-year-work-plan/work-plan-section-b
History of Representative Species in the Northeast Region
Presentation slides from Rick Bennett.
South Atlantic LCC Natural Resource Indicator Process
Rua Mordecia, Science Coordinator with the South Atlantic LCC, provide an overview of the process the South Atlantic LCC took to identify Natural Resource Indicators.
South Atlantic LCC Resource Indicator Process
Approach used by the South Atlantic LCC in deciding on a process in identifying resource indicators.
Bridgett's Presentation RI&SS
Presentation by Appalachian LCC Science Coordinator on NR Resource Indicators and Surrogate Species process.
Working Documents - Merging RI/SS Approaches
Initial working documents developed to begin comparing the two approaches used to date for identification of Resource Indicators and Surrogate Species, and support decision-making on a way forward for the AppLCC.
"MegaLinks" to RI/SS Decision Support Information
This file contains weblinks to a large number of resources from state and federal agencies' websites that could be used in support of decisions regarding the RI/SS process and/or consideration of potential RIs or SSs. Created by AppLCC Staff.
FWS National Guidance on Surrogate Species
Background materials from the FWS in support of the use of surrogate species as part of the Service's commitment to Landscape Conservation and Strategic Habitat Conservation.
Species List & Habitat Association List
This folder contains a collection of species lists developed for the Appalachians from several different perspectives. The first 8 files are summary reports based on an Access database developed by the AppLCC. The underlying data exists elsewhere on the Portal as an Access Database and include listing by State. The database was developed from SWAP lists and FWS lists. The remaining lists are either earlier species lists developed by the AppLCC or species lists generated by partners. All of these are collected here to support development of a potential surrogate species list for the AppLCC.
AppLCC Global Trust Species - Lists for each State
Wildlife species considered an 'LCC Global Trust': listed by state (Excludes fish)
AppLCC Species Database
This access database includes a search feature which will easily query species by: State, LCC Global Trust, Common Name, Scientific Name, Habitat Type, or any combination of these.
FWS Region-5 NALCC Representative Species Approach
This folder contains background materials introducing the "representative species" approach Region-5 began prior to the formal adoption by the Service to promote a surrogate species approach (to inform landscape-level conservation.)
FWS Region-4 SALCC Natural Resource Indicators
The SALCC included the identification of "surrogate species" as part of its biological or natural resource indicators to support the planning and conservation at the landscape-level
Resource Indicator Lists
Preliminary lists of Resource Indicators supplied to AppLCC by SALCC (and possibly others) for consideration during process of selecting RIs for AppLCC.
Priority Birds - AMJV revision underway March 2013
The Appalachian Mountain JV is beginning the process of updating the AMJV priority bird species list, which has not been updated since 2008. Their goal is to eventually create bird-habitat models for each priority species.
Supporting Information from Other LCCs in NE and SE
AppLCC Staff have placed here information they gathered on approaches other LCCs in the NE and SE have taken to address RIs/SSs; including any RI or SS lists developed or drafted to date.
Maps & GIS Materials
This folder contains various background materials on ecoregions across the AppLCC.
